What a difference a year makes. Last February, I made the Hermoine hat for myself on size 5 circs. This January, I used the same yarn and the same needles to make the same hat. Only, it turned out a little big, so it seems I’m a tad less uptight than I was last winter. At least this is what I’m telling myself.

The hat is a birthday gift for my SIL. I’m going to send it to her with a note that if it is too big, she should let me know and I’ll knit her another (on 4’s). Some kind of sisterhood of the traveling hat magic could happen and it could fit. At least this is what I’m telling myself.
I also noticed that I look like I’ve aged a lot in a year – my eyes have dark circles under them. The good news on this is the first hat was done in DC (no allergies) and the second hat was done in mid-January in what I’m sure must be the Live Cedar Capital of the World. I haven’t really aged all that much in a year. At least this is what I’m telling myself…

You know all those mother-in-law horror stories that you’ve heard? Well, I’m very lucky because my MIL is the exact opposite of all that. So, when I started dropping hints to see if there was anything she’d like knitted, she asked for a cabled scarf. And since she’s so wonderful, it couldn’t be just any cabled scarf, it had to be reversible! Cables on both sides! I was thrilled to have an excuse to try this pattern and since TH kept admiring it while it was in progress, I felt fairly certain that she would like it.

In other news, I had a hard time convincing myself that I wanted to spend thirty-six dollars on yarn for mittens. A THIRTY SIX dollar pair of mittens? That’s a lot, but the mini mochi was really making me crazy, and really, I’d be paying to be entertained whilst knitting and I could subtract six dollars for the free pattern from SpillyJane….so, it’s okay, right?
Wrong! Really wrong! These mittens weigh less than an oz. a piece. That means that out of the seven oz of malabrigo, I can make seven sets of mittens which means that they actually cost around five dollars a set! That’s much more palatable. Now, I think we all know I’m not making seven sets of black and cream or cream and black mitts, but still, it is nice to know one could make seven sets without spending two hundred and fifty dollars.
