Let’s talk a little bit about ego. Last week started with me carrying around a very basic washcloth as my on the go knitting and having lovely luck. I was working on the Delias socks at home whilst watching tv and things were going swimmingly. Then, I got a little cocky. These socks are not THAT complicated and I think I’ve got the rhythm and I want to be making more progress. Into my purse they went. Wednesday, I worked on them during lunch with friends and while chatting/drinking a hot chocolate that evening. Then, I sat down to work on them and thought, crikey! The nice schwoop schwoop schwoops up the side looked perfect on one side of the sock and on the other side looked more like schwoop schwoop splat! I started tinking back just to see what went on and realized that in addition to that, I seemed not to have changed my row marker after row 4 (the cable cross row)! Unknit. Unknit. Unknit. Everything is straightened out except for the schwoops. I’m dropping stitches back to where the schwooping is perfect and then I shall go from there (in two different places). Can you see the mistake?



Now, the universe is back in balance and I can carry on.


A knitting friend said, “You need a project with lots of stockinette in your purse, so you can chat.” I responded, “Perhaps that is why the Yarn Harlot is always knitting plain self-striping socks.” She replied, “Yes. It’s not because she’s dumb.” I could only nod.

Small Things (I’m listening to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. It’s more well-written than I was expecting from a series called The Mortal Instruments. Her vocabulary is impressive and her comedic timing is spot on. I’m really enjoying it and am looking forward to the next book in the series…and checking out the movie on DVD in December.

At some point, I said, “I’ll never knit socks. Why would you want to walk on your knitting?”

Ok, I LOVE knitting socks.

But, I’ll never knit socks for a kid. They wouldn’t appreciate them. They might lose one since they take their socks off all over creation. They grow too fast. They’d be too hard on them.

Allow me to introduce the game changer.


I visited his people on Memorial Day with two pairs of socks on the needles. I was working on the second zombie sock and the second Linaria Bipartita Sock by Hunter Hammersen. He was enamored.



Saturday night, I was babysitting and we sat down to watch a movie. He tried to hand me the Linaria sock in progress off the end table. I said, “No, that one’s too complicated, I’d need the other one, in the orange bag in my purse.” Would you believe, this child crawled down off the couch and ran over to my purse where he pulled the orange project bag out and held it up for confirmation. I grinned and said “yes” and he ran back over to hand it to me and crawl back up on the couch so I could knit and watch a movie with him.

So, yea, I knit him some socks. (in a colorway of his choice)

 

…and I don’t care if he pulls one off and loses it the first time he wears them. I’ll knit more.

I’ve been knitting through the The Knitter’s Curiosity Cabinet, Volume II Knit-a-long on Ravelry and the socks we’re working on now are the Delias eucharis Socks by Hunter Hammersen (Plucky Knitter Plucky Feet). The socks are gorgeous, but I could not decide what color I was feeling. I swatched in Gone Glamping (far left) after narrowing down my list to these.


…but I just did NOT love it. Then, while getting ready one morning, I wished for slateish blue socks, so…….behold my Delias in progress in The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering – Flying Atlas.


Sudden inspiration for the win!
