I like to think of myself as a storyteller. Mostly I tell stories about knitting.

I don’t say that very often, but Friday night, I gave myself a talking to and that is what I said.
I was working on my gray socks and had just realized that a heel and two pattern repeats ago, I’d started doing left cable crosses instead of right. fyi: Knitting a different pattern in between sock 1 and 2 for mirrored patterns is a brilliant idea. I had to rip out a week’s worth of knitting and would miss the end of month Knit-a-Long deadline for sure.

But, as I’d just learned that four Houston Firefighters were killed and five more injured, I decided that having to rip out knitting isn’t a real problem. I grew up in Houston and know a handful of HFD guys well. My heart goes out to all those that cared for the fallen firefighters and I pray that their memories will comfort them. I’m so sorry for their loss.

In a weird way, it made me feel a tad better to be ripping out work. As I violently ripped out row after row, it suited my mood.

It stinks to rip out knitting, but you are right, there are more important things going on. Something good to remember. I hope your sock knitting goes smoothly this time around!

  2. How terrible. I hadn’t heard about the firefighters. We live 1 block from the park that runs through half of our town of 10,000. In it is featured the Wildland Firefighter Memorial. It’s a winding walk through aspens and pines with boulders interspersed throughout. On it is a picture and bio for each of the firefighters that didn’t come back from a wildfire about 12 years ago. I remember when the tragedy happened and it took many of our young people… Sometimes a good rip through some stitches is just what we need. Way to keep things in perspective.

I do believe I saw those socks.

    Perfection.

And my prayers go out to the HFD, too. They’re certainly going through a tough time right now.

Those socks are going to be stunning. I’m sorry you had to rip so much. :(

Sorry to hear about the ripping out part, but those socks are going to be great and worth the effort.

So glad you did the unravelling to fix your sock. Personally I like to do it immediately I realize there’s an error so I don’t think about it and make it bigger than it is.
    Enjoy your knitting.

It’s definitely better to worry about ripping out knitting than to be worrying about life and death. Of course, my ultimate preference would be for neither to be a worry. Good luck with your socks!
