I thought the second appley sock was going to be boring after that first hiccup, but at some point, I lost track of where I was in the chart and all of a sudden, I had an extra row of zigs where there should have been zags. Not to worry, I ripped a couple of rows and all was right with the world again.


I must confess that I love these little socks. I don’t know if it was the yummy yarn or the smooth pattern or that people far and wide have been admiring them or fond thoughts of the person they’re going to live with, but even with the rough patches, I really enjoyed knitting these lovelies. I felt like a process knitter for once in my life.

So. My subconscious thinks I am lacking in blog fodder enough that it is conspiring against me. At least that’s my story. I split the 72 stitches of this sock into 32 stitches for the front of the socks and 40 for the back. Now, you math geniuses are thinking, that’s interesting. I wonder what kind of pattern doesn’t have you split the stitches in half. And the answer is, I don’t know, but not this one.

The chart has a section of 4 stitches that repeat and I ended up with four extra stitches on the back set of dpn’s and then managed not to notice for SIX repeats of the pattern. I analyzed all kinds of (insane) solutions before I bit the bullet and ripped back to the ribbing.

My theory is that I normally knit the 64 stitch size in Hunter’s socks and I wasn’t paying attention, so I did 32 on the first set of DPN’s thinking that was half. The good news is that I knit the cast on tail through 32 stitches, so that bad boy is never coming loose.

When working with yarn that might bleed, you’re going to want to wash it before you knit to make sure it isn’t going to bleed AFTER you’ve wrestled with it for eons.


Here’s the back story on that priceless tip:
I WAS thrilled with the Vanessa socks and gave them a quick cold bath (I’d let the water sit for a day so it would be cool since it is like 105 degrees out and my tap water is warm). While taking them out of slightly brown water they’d been in less than 5 minutes, I hoped/prayed the yellow would be less green when they dried and tried to ignore the sick feeling in my stomach. No such luck. The colors next to the yellow bled and there was a darkish stain down the middle. I resisted a frustrated cry and wrapped the less than satisfactory socks up for Turtle.
God bless her, she opened them and exclaimed over them like they were the Sistine Chapel. Only a day later when I mentioned the stain during the photo shoot did she even acknowledge it. She agreed that if she didn’t crease them on that line when she washed them, the stain might fade. I offered to overdye them so they’d be semi-solid but she declined, declaring that she still loved them which made me feel worlds better. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why she is now the proud owner of a second pair of socks knit by yours truly.
