Comments Off on Red Dawn at Midnight (no spoilers)
Category: movie reviews

The Husband and I caught a midnight showing of Red Dawn tonight. I should disclaim that I have not seen the original.

1. The fact that they are trying to sell Josh Peck as Chris Hemsworth’s brother was distracting to me. They look nothing alike. Yes, I know it is a movie, but they could have bothered to get an actor that at least had one feature in common with Chris…someone a little more Chris Pine-like (good call, Star Trek folks). Little birds report that this was an issue with the original as well.

2.Josh Hutcherson (Peeta of Hunger Games fame) must have thought Red Dawn seemed like a walk in the park.

3. The height differences between Chris Hemsworth and the rest of the cast was distracting too (yes, I’m probably even more easily distracted at midnight than normal, but there you have it). I felt better about my waundering mind when Jeffrey Dean Morgan showed up on set and I was able to verify that yes, indeed it did look like Hemsworth was supervising munchkins.

4. The script wasn’t half bad.

5. I could have done without the feel good brotherly moments, but I guess they were staying true to the original.

6. The movie was good – the 5.7 on imdb seems a bit harsh. I’d probably be more in the 7 range. If I hadn’t gone to see this movie at midnight, it would be a solid 7.5, but if I’m staying up like a teenager, the movie needs to deliver.

Friday night, I saw Breaking Dawn Part 2 with the girls.

1. Bones and I got there an hour and a half early to save seats, but there was no line. I suppose we picked our theater wisely, but it just didn’t feel like a Twilight Opening Night with no line drama. I did get a pretty weird look from the lady working concessions when I asked where the line would be forming, so I shall have to make do with that.

2. I attempted to work on gnomes while waiting in the non-line, but it turns out gnomes are not that great for travel knitting. I’ll have to start a plain pair of socks soon. Here’s the gnome whose pants were done that night.

3. The movie was better than I expected. The costumes were very well done and there were plenty of special effects. The screen-writing, while still Twilight, has improved with each movie.

4. There was some knitwear, but nothing worth mentioning.

5. I am now Team Benjamin…and lest you think I’m a cradle-robber kind of gal, the actor is in his 30’s. (and after you see the movie, I’m sure you’ll agree.)

6. We got souvenir cups. I know. You’re jealous.

This past weekend, my BF from college drove over to visit and was sweet enough to help with my Twilight Party. She’s always been a git ‘er done kind of girl, but since having twin boys, I think she’s kicked it up another notch. THANK YOU, K for the help and the laughs! She hadn’t been to one of my Twilight parties before and wondered if she should have packed vampire teeth. She’s a very good sport, but it’s not that kind of party.

For bloody-rimmed glasses:
Pour some lite corn syrup into a saucer and add a bit of red food coloring. Stir. Add more food coloring until the desired color is reached. Dip the glass into the mix and spin. Stand the glass up and clean the outside so guests do not get sticky from the bloody decoration.
(Thank goodness K found the corn syrup, I couldn’t find it and we almost didn’t have bloody glasses!)

Rose Petals

$5 worth of rose petals went a long way.

Dark Knight Rises Cocktail

Drink if you're Team Jacob

Found cool red/black drink on Pinterest for the signature cocktail. It is called “Dark Knight Rises”.
Attempted to buy black vodka (berry flavored) at liquor store.
Proprieters looked at me like I was crazy. (turns out the brand is Eristoff)
Bought black food coloring and clear raspberry vodka.
Added food coloring to vodka (if you must know, I unintentionally added more than was reasonable).
Made drink (ice, 1 oz Cranberry juice, 1 oz lemonade, 1 oz black vodka in that order).
Black food coloring bled into the entire drink (it luckily, did not seem to stain my teeth)….I have dubbed this the Jacob Black Cocktail. Enjoy!
Ps. Happy BD2 Opening Night, Twilighters!
