Katherine the Great
I like to think of myself as a storyteller. Mostly I tell stories about knitting.

Some Plucky Knitter yarn came in the mail just in time to convince me that I didn’t REALLY need anything this month when she did updates. It was a near thing, I can tell you. But, to stave off my yarn spending (for now), let us reflect on these new puppies.

Singin' the Blues
I’m going to make these Scoundrel socks with this lovely blue. The pattern, by Hunter Hammersen, will be out this fall.

Wintry Mix
I don’t know what this Wintry Mix Primo Fingering will grow up to be, but I sure do like the cut of its jib. The funny thing is that when these beauties came in the mail, I was a little disappointed. The colors looked a little flat, you see. Then, I took them out of the plastic packaging and ohhhhhh. False alarm. They are gorgeous.

Speaking of Plucky Knitter, I’ve just started knitting Linaria Bipartita Socks – pattern by Hunter Hammersen (try to act surprised) in Plucky Knitter’s Primo Fingering – colorway Elegant Elephant on my super pointy Sig. Arts needles. Ain’t life grand?!?

First, I really enjoy dropping stitches. It’s the same feeling I used to get when a teacher would suddenly announce that a test was open-book. Legal cheating?!? wheeee!!! So, I’m on my just dropped some stitches high, and I’m knitting along and the pattern says to knit the heel flap. About halfway through the heel flap, I realize that the stockinette fabric is thin. Too thin for a heel – these will be worn out in no time and since they’re a gift, that simply will not do.
Stockinette Heel

Now, I’m, at the very least, an intermediate sock knitter, so I get a little smug and rip back the heel flap, I read a little bit of the The Knitter’s Book of Socks and begin again with a lovely slip stitch flap. I finish that up, admire my handy work and then go back to the pattern to see what she has planned next…

…only to realize that the pattern ACTUALLY says that I should have done a slip stitch heel to begin with. Nice. At this point, I realize that I have two pattern reading modes:
– Test and complex knitting mode, where I read every comma, every word, every stitch.
– and evidently pattern scan mode where I assume I know what it says. In case you’re wondering, this is not the most efficient way to knit.

It was pretty outside last weekend and The Husband and I were lazing about under a tree soaking it all in Saturday. I’d taken my knitting out but it was lounging forgotten on the pattern amidst the green grass while I reclined on a football blanket…and Sydney was milling around sniffing for truffles or some such thing when I hear, “your yarn!” from The Husband. It seems Sydney had been eating a bit of grass and had mistaken my yarn for yummy blades. Thankfully, the yarn was not broken and appeared none the worse for wear other than being slimed. She had quickly realized that it did not taste like the salad she was after. I laughed and took it in to the house to soak that section in some water and eucalan. I ended up having to manually wipe the dog slobber off the yarn, but it held up perfectly. Toe decreases done Sunday with dry yarn.
Leafy Sock

Second sock is in progress.
Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off
I’ve almost finished reading Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off (a Yarn Harlot book). This one is fine, but is not my favorite. I recommend Knitting Rules or All Wound Up.
