That’s how I’d define my relationship………with this sock.
1. Start with Silver’s Sock Class Pattern for the cuff.
2. Forethought heel.
3. Knit the foot. (how long? The sock owner-to-be has tiny feet. We’re talking elf feet here. I’ll just knit for a bit and worry about that later. That always works out fine.)
3a. Realize that I don’t know how long the afterthought heel is going to be, so I don’t know when to start the toes even with foot measurements.
3b. Use the second ball of yarn to knit the afterthought heel so I can measure the foot.
3c. Rip out two inches of knitting so the sock will actually fit. (no worries, that knitting kept me from being angry whilst I waited on various things, it was for a good cause).
4. Knit the toes a la Silver. (Look at this sock and doubt that there’s any way it will fit. This is what I get for going all Dr. Frankenstein on a couple of sock patterns.)
I’m sure it just needs a good blocking.

I was happily knitting along on my Lochness hitchhiker. I had the pattern memorized. I had plenty of yarn. “What could go wrong?” This is like that point in a horror film when someone says, “I’ll be write back.” and you know they’re not coming back.
On the last row of point 38, I switched to the second ball of yarn and knit 4-6 rows and then I went back to weave in the ends. A fine idea. I was pleased with how they disappeared.
Then I picked up the needles to continue knitting point 39. Sons of anarchy! Ten stitches had slipped off the needles! That’s scarey. I picked them up. Whew! crisis averted. I’m a rockstar. wait. where is my row counter? I had a row counter. It tells me what row I’m on. Where the devil is the row counter?!? I begin to dig in the blankets because I’m sitting in bed watching tv and knitting. I find the row counter and it is at that point that I realize that finding it will not tell me what row I’m on. Sweet Fancy Moses, that sucks.
Had I just finished row 4 or row 6? I tried to read the knitting. ummmm.yea. I don’t know. This is my first garter stitch knit since I learned to knit years ago. I could google it, but where the points are throws me off knowing which row I should even be counting from. I start the bind offs for the point and analyze. That looks too soon. I unknit and add the extra two rows and start the point again. After finishing that row, I fold it over and measure the valley between points 38 and 39 against the valley between points 37 and 38. They seem to match. and I’m back in the game!
I was able to finish Tuesday evening and I really like how the points of the shadows turned out in the pictures….just like a Lochness monster! Now, it just needs a bath, some serious blocking and Nessie will be off to her forever home.

This is my second year to participate in the Iknitarod. You may recall last year’s effort. The goal of the Iknitarod is to pick a project and start with the mushers and finish before the last Iditarodder crosses the finish line (and the red lantern is awarded). I cast on for a hitchhiker shawl Saturday March 2 with the ceremonial start as planned, but it was a near thing.
I knew that I was knitting with sock yarn and have a wide variety of sock-sized needles. What I neglected to realize is that socks are knit more tightly than shawls. I really didn’t need a gauge, but I didn’t want the shawl too big because I’m hoping to get all 42 points of the shawl out of the one of a kind yarn I’m using and not have to bind off with fewer points. So, a gauge it must be.
Rat on a stick! 3.5mm are too big. I will knit another gauge on 3.25mm needles. Um, yeah. I need to be knitting with 3.25mm and I’m smart enough to realize I do not to want to use 3.5mm and try to knit REALLY tightly when I’m already deadline knitting (I have my moments.). So, I dump needles all over the guest room bed in my quest for 3.25mm needles longer than the dpn’s I’ve used for the gauge.
Addi clicks start at 3.5mm and go up.
Straights that I’ve purchased begin at US6 and go up.
My circular needles are smaller than 3mm and larger than 4mm. Great. Who is running this outfit?!? oh yea, me.
Then I recall that my good friend, Sam, bought an arseload of needles at an auction and was kind enough to share some with me and I have all those in yet another needle case. WINNING! There’s a nice slick pair of 3.25mm Susan Bates straights to get me through the weekend ’til I can hit a LYS in town Monday and get some circs. I was able to avoid a broken sled and pulled out with the other teams after all. Crisis averted.
Now, I’m 1/3 of the way through the race. Martin Buser has had an amazing couple of days and I’m pulling for Aliy Zirkle (in 2nd Tuesday night).
MUSH!
